Position Size Calculator
Calculate the correct lot size to manage your risk.
How to use it
- Enter your account balance in dollars.
- Enter the share of the account you will risk on this trade. 1% is a common ceiling.
- Enter the stop distance in dollars of gold price. Entry at 4,150.00 with a stop at 4,135.00 is a $15 stop.
- Read the lot size. Round down to the nearest size your broker allows, usually 0.01 lots.
The formula
Risk amount = balance × risk %
Lots = risk amount ÷ (stop distance in $ × 100)
Worked example
A $10,000 account risking 1% has $100 at risk.
With a $15 stop, one standard lot (100 oz) would lose $15 × 100 = $1,500.
$100 ÷ $1,500 = 0.067 lots, shown as 0.07. Rounding down to 0.06 lots (6 micro lots of 1 oz) keeps the loss under $100.
Good to know
- Most MT4 and MT5 brokers define one standard gold lot as 100 troy ounces. Some use 10 oz or 1 oz contracts, so check the contract size in your broker’s symbol specification before you trade.
- Spread and commission are not included. On a tight stop they can be a large share of the risk, so size slightly smaller.
- Slippage on news can carry a fill past your stop. Size for the loss you can take if that happens.
